After some +14 years, (January 2024) of continuous use, the installation here still looks like new, even when the LEDline® grooves and installation cross from concrete pads to asphalt and back again.
Even though the grooves are cut in all directions, there are no degradation, spalling, or cracks in the concrete pads or asphalt,
At Vancouver, the LEDline® guidance lighting has never been turned off,
yet the LEDline® and its LEDs are still visible in bright sunlight.
LEDline® was initially installed in the fall of 2009.
From the enclosed 2019 pictures of the LEDline® installation (Copyright Mr. Tim Holtz, Vancouver's Airfield Lighting Engineer), none of the concrete pads or asphalt has had any damage done to them by the "cargo heavies" or the LEDline® installation. Indeed, despite selecting the most likely damaged prone areas to photograph, the small off angles, edges, or concrete / asphalt transitions etc., the installation still looks like new.
why Vancouver international's de-icing pads are excellent testing grounds for any in-pavement installations:
Vancouver International on the Pacific coast, so Vancouver is a major departure HUB for all traveling to Asia and the Pacific. This is ESPECIALLY true FOR THE cargo "HEAVIES" AIRCRAFT, the so the LEDLINE® there; + has survived the heaviest of aircraft traveling on it. + Has experiences winter SNOWPLOUGHS AND AIRFIELD RUNWAY/TAXIWAY DE-ICING BRUSHES; + BEING NEXT TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, IT AND ITS INSTALLATION HAVE SURVIVED MANY/FREQUENT FREEZE/THAW CYCLES, yet it still looks Great; + Is close to major active Tectonic plates and fault lines, "The Pacific Ring of Fire" and so the the area averages 500 earth tremors a year, yet the LEDLINE® is unaffected! + HAS SURVIVED MANY YEARS OF CHEMICALLY AGGRESSIVE DE-ICING PAD CHEMICALS; + IS EXPERIENCING INCREASING SUMMER HEAT! + After never having been turned off since its installation in the fall of 2009, some +15 years and counting. THE LEDLINE® there and its installation has not been affected and is still in operation and use today April 2025.
